My 1972 MA Thesis was on Newsreel, the political filmmaking group that was a key part of the New Left. Based in New York and San Francisco primarily, they made dozens of films on topics like the anti-Vietnam war movement, the anti-draft movement, campus strikes, racism, exploitation, and contributed one of the first feminist documentaries, The Women’s Film. The MA covers from their inception to 1972 and my Ph.D. takes up the later years of the group. The dissertation was published by Arno Press but the MA has only been available at UCLA and the American Film Institute library until now.
